The Unity in the Community Three on Three Basketball Tournament will be held from 10:30 a.m.- 8 p.m. on Saturday, June 3rd at the basketball court at Lineberger Park, 632 E Garrison Blvd., Gastonia. The event, for ages 12 and up, is currently in part sponsored by the Gastonia Police Department, Gastonia Parks and Recreation, the Gastonia Police Foundation, and the North State Law Enforcement Officers Association.
The Gastonia Police Department serves over 73,000 people in Gastonia, North Carolina. The mission of the Gastonia Police Department is to protect, serve and enhance the quality of life. This mission is accomplished by a commitment to reducing criminal victimization, striving to ensure safety in public places, reducing fear and enhancing personal security. Developing and promoting community partnerships is one goal of the Gastonia Police Department. Specific goals and objects are established to achieve the mission of the police department.
Having more citizen involvement in problem resolution concerning the needs within the community and encouraging a positive working relationship with organizations within the community will help the police department accomplish this goal. In some communities, within the United States, there has been complaints from citizens saying there is a disconnect between police officers and the communities they serve. The Gastonia Police Department wants to increase participation in citizen events to bridge any gaps in communication.
People age 12 and over will be eligible to play in the free 3 on 3 basketball tournament. There will be three different age categories for the tournament including:
Ages 12-14 (12 teams)
Ages15-18 (12 teams)
Adult ages 19+ (12 teams)
- Tournament is a bracket style tournament.
- Each team will be guaranteed two games.
- Winners will be assessed by quality wins (point difference)
- Each age bracket tournament champion will received a prize pack that will be determined by donations. (Previous years included trophy, basketballs, bags, head bands, socks, and other items
- Each participant receives a tournament t-shirt that has tournament sponsors on the back.
History of Tournament
The Gastonia Police Dept. held its first annual “Unity in the Community” 3 on 3 Basketball Tournament on May 17, 2015 at Lineberger Park in Gastonia, North Carolina. The second was held on June 4, 2016 at 913 N Pryor Street (Erwin Center). Due to the positive feedback from participants and community members, the police department plans to continue the tournament as an annual event. Building positive relationships with the community in a non-enforcement environment is the purpose of the basketball tournament. The Gastonia Police Department will hold the 2017 “Unity in the Community Basketball Tournament” on June 3rd, 2017 at Lineberger Park (632 E Garrison Blvd, Gastonia NC, 28054).
During the “Unity in the Community” event, contacts have been made with over 300 people and over 90 basketball participants throughout the day. Over 400 plates of food have been given out during the 7 hour event. All participants in the basketball tournament received t-shirts. Individual businesses in the past like The Law Offices of Eddie Meeks and The Law Offices of Kelvin Atkinson made monetary contributions that went towards the purchase of prizes from Dicks Sporting Goods. Businesses like Choice USA Beverages, McDonalds, and Bojangles made in-kind donations of beverages and coupons for the event participants. S&L in Lowell, North Carolina donated the trophies and plaques for the event.
